Course Information
Lesson planning and setting clear, client-centred goals are essential skills for both Potential Driving Instructors (PDIs) preparing for the Part 3 test and Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) undertaking their Standards Check. This course focuses on developing your ability to structure lessons effectively, agree on goals with your pupil, and adapt your plan when necessary to support learning and meet assessment criteria. It provides the knowledge and practical strategies required to excel in the recap briefings and debriefs that form a crucial part of both tests.
What the Course Covers
In this session, you will gain:
- A clear understanding of the DVSA’s expectations around lesson planning and goal setting.
- Techniques for conducting effective recaps and debriefs that support pupil understanding.
- How to select appropriate lesson topics and areas for practice based on pupil needs.
- Timing strategies and lesson pacing for Part 3 tests and Standards Checks.
- When and how to adapt a lesson plan in response to pupil progress or unforeseen circumstances.
- Practical examples of common lesson planning challenges and how to address them.
Interactive Learning
The course is hands on and discussion-based, providing opportunities to practice key skills and apply them to real life scenarios. You will also have the chance to ask questions and explore practical tips for making lesson planning more efficient and goal focused.
Who Should Attend?
This course is suitable for PDIs preparing for their Part 3 test and ADIs working towards a Standards Check who want to refine their planning and goal setting approach. It is also beneficial for qualified instructors looking to refresh their skills and improve the learning experience for their pupils.
Your Instructor
The session is led by a Grade A Approved Driving Instructor with extensive experience in coaching trainee instructors and post test clients, including fleet work. Their insight and practical knowledge will help you approach lesson planning with confidence and flexibility.

Amending or cancelling your course
You can easily amend or cancel your course once it has been booked. Please call us on 0330 111 7230 or email info@greenpenny.co.uk to do this. Please ensure you give enough notice to amend or cancel – you must give at least 4 clear working days notice so that you don’t lose your fee (working days = Monday to Friday, not including bank holidays. 4 clear working days, does not include the day you inform us you would like to cancel or the date of the course or test).
If you have already attended the full course, or part of the course, then no cancellation or change of date is possible and no refund will be due. If you fail to attend a course or test on the date you have booked, or you arrive late, no refund or date change will be available.
